I wrote this post 13 years ago. It's an excerpt from a short autobiography written by Maurizio Cattelan. Artists constantly push boundaries and challenge norms through their works. The Italian visual artist, known for his provocative artworks and keen sense of humor, wrote some insightful words that still resonate deeply today.

1# "...once you taste a bit of freedom, it's impossible to go back..."

2# "The great advantage of this non-education is that it gave me a different perspective and more freedom of action, not because I was freer, but because ignorance sometimes makes one brave. Since I had no formal training, I had to make my own experiences, and my first steps were attempts to understand how things worked.."

3# "Art is a kind of free environment where one can establish their individual rules. The important thing is to stick to oneself and one's vision, whatever it may be."

4# "Group exhibitions are important moments for artists, because they allow them to confront others, as people and as colleagues. The way they work is a bit of a mystery... But the confrontation generates a debate, implicit or explicit, and a great opportunity to improve one's language, to become stronger..."

5# "The only concept of novelty I have in mind when I start a project is not to repeat the previous one. Sometimes I fear that I have developed a sort of style that I must strive to escape and fight against the influence of my work. Repetition is a form of early death."

6# "I have always thought that if you have something to say, it's better to say it with your actions, by making proposals. I have much more respect for those who spark debates through practice than for theorists."

7# "What we are witnessing is primarily an unprecedented situation in which for the first time ever, everyone, but really everyone, can say something. It's the principle of total chaos where to save one's skin one will have to create playlists around their interests. There will be dozens of playlists: for those interested in philosophy, for those interested in reincarnation, and so on. Maybe one day all these ecosystems will come together in a 'universal conversation', but before that happens one must be absolutely sure of their identity- We are prisoners of a double logic: expansion and specialization."

1# "...una volta che si assaggia un pò di libertà è impossibile tornare indietro..."

2# "Il grande vantaggio di questa non-educazione è che mi ha dato un punto di vista diverso e più libertà d'azione, non perchè fossi più libero, ma perchè l'ignoranza a volte rende coraggiosi. Dal momento che non avevo una formazione dovevo fare da solo le mie esperienze, e i miei primi passi sono stati prove per tentare di capire come funzionavano le cose.."

3# "L'arte è una specie di ambiente libero dove uno può stabilire le sue regole individuali. L'importante è attenersi a se stessi e alla propria visione, qualunque essa sia."

4# "Le mostre collettive sono dei momenti importanti per gli artisti, perchè permettono di confrontarsi con gli altri, come persone e come colleghi. Il modo in cui funzionano è un pò un mistero... Ma il confronto genera un dibattito, implicito o esplicito, ed un'ottima occasione per migliorare il proprio linguaggio, per diventare più forte..."

5# "L'unico concetto di novità che ho in testa quando comincio un progetto è di non ripetere quello precedente. A volte ho il timore di aver sviluppato una sorta di stile da cui devo sforzarmi di sfuggire e combattere contro l'influenza del mio lavoro. La ripetizione è una forma di morte prematura".

6# "Ho sempre pensato che se si ha qualcosa da dire è meglio dirla con le proprie azioni, facendo proposte. Ho molto più rispetto per chi innesca dei dibattiti a partire dalla pratica che per i fabbricanti di teorie."

7# "Quello a cui assistiamo è soprattutto una situazione inedita in cui per la prima volta tutti, ma veramente tutti, possono dire qualcosa. E' il principio del caos totale dove per salvare la pelle bisognerà creare delle playlist intorno ai propri centri d'interesse. Ci saranno decine di playlist: per chi si interessa di filosofia, per chi si interessa di reincarnazione e via dicendo. Forse un giorno tutti questi eco-sistemi si raduneranno in una "conversazione universale", ma prima che accada bisognerà essere assolutamente certi della propria identità- Siamo prigionieri di una doppia logica: l'espansione e la specializzazione."
